HOMEPAGEBLOGIstanbul Airport to Sultanahmet: All Options Compared (2026)

Istanbul Airport (IST) is a long way from the old city. There are four realistic ways to reach Sultanahmet, and the difference between them is not only price - it is how much you will wrestle with your luggage. All figures below are as of August 2026 and change from time to time.

1. Metro (M11 + M2 + tram) - cheapest, hardest

Take the M11 from the airport to Gayrettepe, change to the M2 towards Yenikapi, then connect to the T1 tram for Sultanahmet. A single journey costs around 80 TL and you need an Istanbulkart, which you can buy from the Biletmatik machines inside the terminal.

With the changes, the whole trip takes 1.5 to 2 hours. Two transfers and several staircases mean it is not recommended with large suitcases. If you travel alone with a backpack and land during the day, this is the cheapest option by far.

2. Havaist bus - the middle ground

The Havaist HVL-1 line runs to Aksaray, from where the T1 tram takes you two stops to Sultanahmet. The ticket is around 470 TL, the bus ride takes about 90 minutes, and with the tram connection you should plan for roughly two hours.

The bus has proper luggage space, so it is more comfortable than the metro. In heavy traffic it takes longer, and you still finish the journey on a tram with your bags.

3. Yellow taxi - fast but expensive

Taxis at Istanbul Airport work on a fixed fare; the meter is not used. Published fares to Sultanahmet range from about 1,900 to 2,600 TL depending on the source. The drive takes 50-65 minutes depending on traffic.

Two things to watch: never accept a ride from someone approaching you inside the terminal - walk to the official taxi rank - and confirm the fixed fare on the board before you get in. Lines like "the fixed fare does not apply tonight" are not true.

4. Private transfer - door to door

With a private transfer the price is agreed when you book and does not change afterwards. Your driver waits at the arrivals gate with a name sign, takes your bags and drops you at your hotel door. No transfers, no travel cards, no negotiating.

Our standard VIP vehicles carry 6 passengers and 6 large suitcases. We track your flight by its number, so if you are delayed your driver comes for the new landing time, and you have 60 minutes of free waiting after landing. You can cancel free of charge up to 24 hours before the transfer. To see the current price, just enter your pick-up and drop-off points in the booking form on our homepage.

Which one is right for you?

  • Solo traveller, light luggage, daytime arrival: the metro makes the most sense.
  • Couple, medium suitcases, budget matters: Havaist is a good balance.
  • Family, children, three or more suitcases, or a night arrival: a private transfer is almost always less stressful, and per person it costs close to a taxi.
  • In a hurry and travelling alone: a yellow taxi is quick - just confirm the fixed fare first.

Please note: these prices were collected in August 2026. We recommend checking current fares before you travel.
